Liaison Committee of the Associations of University Graduate Engineers of the European Union (CLAIU)

CLAIU represents the professional engineering associations in the EU with a long-cycle engineering education (5 years of university education with scientific content). CLAIU supports the Bologna declaration but expresses the need to maintain the two different engineering education lines in Europe (a longer, more scientific formation leading to a conceptual engineer, and a shorter, more practically oriented formation leading to a practical engineer). The end of the first 3 years of study for the conceptual engineer can only result in an intermediate study phase (not in an economically viable degree). As for the higher education titles for engineers, CLAIU has a clear view on the adaptation of existing education titles for engineers in the context of the Bologna declaration. The addition of ”Science” to Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Master of Science in Engineering) can only apply to those types of study which are characterised  by a ”Sciences” content. The ”Bachelor of Science in Engineering” is not a final degree but only a ”university intermediate phase of the conceptual engineering profile”.
